Presence

Recently, I ran across a travel brochure from the 1950’s promoting Florida for winter vacations. The hook: “we have more healthful UV rays than anywhere else in the United States.” Of course I burst into horrified laughter knowing those healthful UV rays were giving cancer to millions of people. Today, we bath ourselves in the rays from TVs, computers, iPhones, gaming platforms and other cyber-screens that have promised to connect us to the world. There is growing scientific consensus that our prolonged screens exposure has its own kind of cancerous effect on our consciousness.

We are turning inwards and away from friends, relationships and God as we get hooked on our virtual realities. We need to cultivate technology-free zones in our lives so our consciousness of God—our feelings, awareness, and thoughts can be protected and allowed room to breathe. We need to realize that technology, while giving us the illusion of being present to the world via the extreme amount of data we consume daily, is eroding presence and consciousness at an alarming rate.
 
 

Pray that the Holy Spirit illuminate all your thoughts, words and deeds so that you can personally encounter Christ in his passion and so find Him in your life story as Creation, Presence, Memory, Mercy and Eternity.

They divide my garments among them,
and for my vesture they cast lots.
But you, O LORD, be not far from me;
O my help, hasten to aid me.
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
